The village resort of Les Houches is located in the Chamonix valley in the Haute Savoie, only 6km from Chamonix, the world capital of skiing and mountaineering. Les Houches lies in the heart of the Mont-Blanc region which is made up of 13 other resorts : Chamonix, Servoz, Vallorcine, Megève, St Gervais, Les Contamines, Praz-sur-Arly, Combloux, Cordon, Domancy, Passy, Sallanches... Situated at 1000 metres of altitude and lying at the foot of Mont-Blanc (4810m), Les Houches offers an exceptional panorama of the peaks surrounding Chamonix.
The village is made up of a number of hamlets, with oratories, chapels, old bread ovens and farms bearing witness to its past and being the objects of particular attention today.
With a 4635 hectare surface and 3070 inhabitants (Houchards - in 2010), Les Houches extends over 8 km between Servoz and Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, on the Arve valley on two hillsides of high crystalline chains : Mont Blanc in the East and the Aiguilles Rouges on the West. The administrative centre of Houches, in 1000 meters of height, is practically directly above the Mont Blanc massif. The municipal limit is situated under the Mont Blanc, in the Dome du Goûter at 4304 meters of height. And from the massif of Aiguilles Rouges, this limit peaks in the Aiguillette of Brévent at 2350 meters of height.
The lowest part of the Municipality is situated in the hamlet of the Lake in 800 meters of height.
Les Houches and Servoz become confused geographically: the villages of the Plaine Saint Jean and of the Lake belonging to the municipality of Les Houches take advantage of services of the Municipality of Servoz, closer, as the Post office, the school … And, Servoz reaches easily of the Lake train station in Les Houches.
Spread out over 5000 hectares, the village of Les Houches is comprised of numerous hamlets which give the resort its richness and contributes in conserving its quaint village aura in the Chamonix valley. Each of these hamlets presents a real cultural, sporting or tourism interest...
In this hamlet you will discover a high-quality built heritage : chapel and baker's ovens testify of past. But Vaudagne is also modern, because it is here that Martial Bourlot, local artist, decided to implant his workshop.
The lovers of animals will also happy, because you can meet, during snowshoeing, our friends of the donkeys Company.
Sports and nature lovers hamlets : cross-country skiing, strolls in rackets, departure of the Prarion Cable car and Maisonneuve Chairlift... It is also the youngs paradise with the tourist Day-care center and the snow garden of the French Ski School, as well with a sleigh area.
Chef lieu is the center of the village where public services and lot of equipments are implanted : city hall, Tourist office, Post, library, Olca hall, The church St-Jean-Baptiste, the mountain museum, the ice rink, as well as the lift of Tourchet.
The departures of the Bellevue cable car and the Coupe du Monde chairlift are situated in Trabets, quite as arrival area of " La Verte des Houches " track of the Ski World Cup.
We can also climbing during all the year thanks to the indoor climbing wall.
The free nature is the main characteristic of this hamlet where you can find the animal Park of Merlet, the adventure park " the Forest of Mont Blanc " and the monumental statue of Christ Roi.
Coupeau is also the departure of ski and snowshoeing trails.
Here, the peace and the tranquillity invite you in the pondering, take the pedestrian road of villages, and admire chapels and oratories. And Why not finish your stroll with a small snack in the farm ?
We go here out of curiosity... and we stay to discover a whole heritage : the lake Chapel, the ruins of the Saint Michel Castle, as well as the famous Saint Bernard breeding kennels.
